Family Dental Care of Owasso is a dental practice that is dedicated to improving oral health through research and practical application. The practice is part of the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network, which is a consortium of dental professionals and organizations committed to advancing knowledge of dental practices and discovering ways to improve them. The network aims to change the narrative that dental research is “scientifically valid, but clinically useless” by implementing studies that will help lead the field of dental practice-based research and dental collegiality.
The National Dental PBRN is supported by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The goal of this initiative is to support patient-oriented clinical research experiences and skills development for clinical faculty in dental schools, particularly those with limited research resources. This initiative aims to expand the culture of scientific inquiry during dental school and postgraduate education, foster scientific collaborations between dental students/residents and clinical faculty, and stimulate additional clinical research pursuits among clinically-oriented faculty members and dental students/residents.
Family Dental Care of Owasso is part of this network, which offers a unique opportunity to conduct clinical research in the real-world environment of dental practice with consenting patients. The benefits of practice-based research include the ability to collect data from practitioners about factors contributing to successful dental procedures and from a patient’s perspective, either during a patient’s visit with the practitioner or outside of the clinic visit. It also allows for the efficient enrollment of large numbers of patients, with each practitioner contributing a relatively small number of patients.
The National Dental PBRN is entering its third cycle of funding from the NIDCR, which supports large observational studies and clinical trials, as well as small developmental/exploratory, feasibility (pilot), and/or survey studies. The network also provides research training opportunities for dental students under NIDCR funded mentors and for dental students pursuing advanced training.
Family Dental Care of Owasso is committed to advancing knowledge of dental practice and ways to improve it, making it a valuable resource for patients seeking high-quality dental care.
