Wichita health watch: Fire-station mold update and ozone season starts with new rebates
Wichita, KS – March 4, 2026 – Mold issues across Wichita fire stations and the start of ozone season are raising new operational and air-quality concerns.
Mold concerns span Wichita fire stations
Wichita Fire Department facilities are under new scrutiny after mold was confirmed at 20 city fire stations, according to reporting from KWCH. The Wichita Firefighters Union said Station 15 in east Wichita remains shut down after an evacuation tied to mold concerns, and that similar conditions were found at 19 other stations.
Union President Ted Bush told KWCH that firefighters had reported the problems previously, but repairs were not completed. Bush also said the union is reviewing communication and maintenance processes that allowed the issue to escalate to an evacuation.
KWCH reported Station 15 is scheduled to reopen on March 6, after the city completes work and conducts additional air testing before crews return.
Ozone season begins; city rolls out lawn-care rebates
The City of Wichita says the 2026 ozone season runs from March 1 through Oct. 31, a period when hot, sunny weather and regional agricultural burning can contribute to higher ground-level ozone. The city describes ground-level ozone as an invisible air pollutant that can affect public health, the environment and the local economy.
To coincide with the season, Wichita launched its 2026 Lawn Care Rebate Program on March 1. The city says it set aside $10,000 for rebates in 2026, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Purchases of qualifying electric lawn equipment made on or after Jan. 1, 2026 may be eligible, and the city’s program page lists rebates of up to $100 per qualifying item with a maximum of two rebates per household.
The city also highlighted steps it encourages residents and businesses to consider during high-ozone days, including reducing vehicle idling and shifting mowing, painting, or other solvent use to later in the day. The rebate program materials also note that applicants must provide proof of recycling older combustion-powered equipment.
