Virginia Beach Health Watch: Respiratory Season, Norovirus Prevention, and EMS Readiness

Virginia Beach, VA – February 23, 2026 – Respiratory virus updates, norovirus prevention reminders, and new steps to keep the resort area safer.

Virginia Beach’s health conversation this week is less about one big headline and more about practical prevention. In the last 144 hours, we found one strong city-specific public health update, plus two local safety and emergency-response items that affect community well-being.

Respiratory season: plan ahead, not just for today

The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health is continuing to share seasonal guidance on flu, RSV, and COVID-19, along with links to vaccine scheduling and local services. If you are due for a flu shot or a COVID-19 booster, booking early can help you avoid scrambling when a household member gets sick.

If someone in your home is higher risk (older adult, pregnancy, chronic lung or heart disease, or immunocompromised), make a simple ‘sick-day plan’ now: where you will test, which pharmacy you will use, and when you will mask in crowded indoor spaces.

Norovirus reminders: soap-and-water matters

VBDPH is also highlighting norovirus prevention as the winter stomach-bug season continues. The basics still work: wash hands well with soap and water (especially after the bathroom and before food prep), disinfect high-touch surfaces, and do not cook for others while you are actively vomiting or having diarrhea.

Tip for families: if your child gets sick overnight, clean up using gloves and a disinfectant labeled for norovirus, then wash laundry on hot when possible. Keep an eye out for dehydration (dry mouth, dizziness, very dark urine, fewer wet diapers).

Community safety: earlier youth curfew aimed at ‘pop-up’ crowds

City Council approved an earlier curfew for unaccompanied minors, shifting from 11 p.m. to 10 p.m., with exceptions such as traveling to and from work. Local officials told WHRO the goal is to reduce safety risks from large, unpermitted gatherings that can be promoted quickly on social media, especially as the resort area gets busier in spring.

EMS readiness at the Convention Center

Virginia Beach also hosted the Virginia Fire Rescue Conference (Feb. 16–21), featuring education sessions and hands-on training across fire and EMS operations. Separately, the Virginia Fire Services Board scheduled multiple committee meetings and awards events at the Virginia Beach Convention Center during the same week. Even when these events are aimed at professionals, the community benefit is real: better training, shared protocols, and stronger coordination during high-demand moments.

Quick checklist for the week ahead

  • Update flu and COVID-19 vaccines if you are behind, and save your clinic and pharmacy numbers.
  • Restock basics: thermometer, oral rehydration, fever reducer, and disinfectant.
  • Know when to get urgent help: trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, or signs of severe dehydration.
