State Approves Regional One Health Plan for New Hospital on Union Avenue
Memphis, TN – March 10, 2026 – Regional One Health has received state approval to build a new hospital on Union Avenue, advancing a major shift for trauma care.
Regional One Health has secured state approval to move forward with construction of a new hospital in Memphis, marking a significant step for the city’s primary safety-net provider and only Level 1 trauma center in West Tennessee.
Certificate of Need Approved
On Monday, March 9, 2026, Regional One Health announced it received Certificate of Need approval from the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission to build a new hospital at 495 Union Ave., the former site of The Commercial Appeal.
The approval allows the hospital system to advance plans to relocate from its current campus at 877 Jefferson Ave. to a modern facility designed to meet current and future patient needs.
Hospital leadership described the project as a long-term investment in Memphis’ health infrastructure, emphasizing its role in serving patients across the Mid-South.
Pressure on Trauma Services
Regional One is the only Level 1 trauma center in West Tennessee and treats more than 12,000 trauma patients each year in a facility originally designed to handle about 4,000.
Hospital officials have said the new site offers greater flexibility for design and programming, which they argue is essential to keeping pace with demand and modern standards of care.
The project is expected to generate substantial economic activity during construction, with hospital leaders citing projections of hundreds of millions of dollars in regional impact by 2027.
What Residents Should Know
The approval does not immediately change where patients receive care. Regional One’s existing hospital on Jefferson Avenue remains fully operational.
Construction timelines and additional planning details are expected to unfold in the coming months as the project moves from approval to development.
As the city’s primary trauma center and a key provider for uninsured and underinsured patients, Regional One’s expansion is closely tied to long-term access to emergency and specialty care for Memphis and surrounding counties.
