Raleigh health brief: State lab’s measles role, Blue Cross NC coverage rules, and a WakeMed blood drive
Raleigh, NC – March 2, 2026 – Raleighs state lab is central to NCs measles response, as WakeMed held a blood drive and Blue Cross NC posted coverage updates.
Measles response: Raleigh’s state lab helps confirm higher-risk cases
As North Carolina continues working through measles investigations, a key part of the response is happening in Raleigh at the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health. WRAL reported that the lab helps confirm higher-risk suspected measles infections, which can influence how quickly public health officials notify potentially exposed groups and coordinate next steps with health care providers.
According to the report, North Carolina has recorded at least 23 measles cases since December 2025, with samples from more than a dozen cases sent to the Raleigh lab. Lab leadership described a process that prioritizes rapid turnaround for situations where timing matters for exposure investigations and public notifications.
WRAL also noted that once measles is confirmed, positive samples are sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for genetic sequencing, which can help officials understand whether cases are linked. The report underscored that public health officials continue to emphasize vaccination as the most effective way to prevent measles.
Health insurance: Blue Cross NC posts medical drug coverage management updates
For residents covered through employer-sponsored plans, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina posted a provider update dated Feb. 26 outlining changes to medical drug utilization management requirements that it says will take effect April 1, 2026 for commercial members with medical benefit coverage.
The insurer’s notice describes updates that can include preferred drug selections and prior authorization requirements for certain medications. Blue Cross NC said the changes are intended to help manage medical drug costs and align coverage with evidence reviews, and it directed providers to its prior authorization tools for detailed coverage information.
Hospital and community: WakeMed hosted a blood drive on its Raleigh campus
WakeMed listed a blood drive held Wednesday, Feb. 25 at its Raleigh Campus on New Bern Avenue. The hospital’s event posting said WakeMed partners with The Blood Connection for drives held throughout the year and noted that donors receive a $40 e-gift card as a thank-you.
Blood drives are a routine part of hospital operations and regional preparedness, supporting ongoing patient care needs across the community.
