Pima County flu cases run above average as hospitals limit visits; AHCCCS posts Medicaid system update
Tucson, AZ – February 27, 2026 – Pima County flu counts are above average, hospitals tighten visits, and AHCCCS outlines Medicaid system upgrades.
Flu activity climbs above seasonal averages
Flu cases in Pima County have moved above recent seasonal averages this respiratory season, with local officials reporting more than 2,700 confirmed infections so far. Tucson Spotlight also reported that emergency room visits are rising, and that school-age children have been among the most affected groups locally.
The same report cited statewide totals topping 20,000 cases and noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has described this season as moderate in severity. Health officials have continued to emphasize vaccination and staying home when sick as the main tools to reduce spread.
Hospitals tighten visitation during respiratory season
At Tucson Medical Center, influenza-related visitation restrictions remain in effect due to increased flu prevalence in Pima County. The hospital’s visitor guidance asks people with influenza-like symptoms not to visit patient units, with additional limits in higher-risk areas such as intensive care.
Hospitals and clinics typically adjust visitor rules and screening during periods of high respiratory illness to protect patients who are older, immunocompromised, or recovering from surgery.
AHCCCS outlines Medicaid system modernization
For residents covered by AHCCCS, Arizona’s Medicaid agency posted a Feb. 25 modernization update describing ongoing upgrades intended to streamline operations and improve data access. The agency said a new Electronic Data Interchange translator is scheduled to go live March 1, a behind-the-scenes change aimed at more efficient data exchange with health plans and clearinghouses.
The update also described planned improvements to program integrity tools and clearer communication around fee-for-service claim denial reasons for providers, as the state continues to refresh systems that support enrollment and claims processing.
Fire station design highlights occupational health
In another health-related development, KOLD reported that Tucson Fire Station 14 opened Feb. 23 on the city’s south side with design features aimed at reducing exposure risks for firefighters. The station includes a dedicated decontamination zone intended to keep residue from turnout gear away from living and dining areas, along with individualized alerting to limit unnecessary sleep disruption for crews.
