Pima County flu activity rises; Carondelet nurses rally; AHCCCS modernization moves ahead

Tucson, AZ – March 2, 2026 – Flu counts in Pima County are above seasonal averages as hospitals and AHCCCS roll out new patient-facing updates.

Flu activity, hospital operations and Medicaid system changes all made local headlines in the past week, with impacts for Tucson-area patients and families.

Flu activity reported above seasonal averages in Pima County

A Feb. 25 report from Tucson Spotlight, citing local health officials, said Pima County influenza activity has moved above recent seasonal averages this respiratory season, with more than 2,700 confirmed infections reported so far. The report also noted rising emergency-room visits and said school-age children (ages 5 to 17) have been among the most affected groups locally.

Health officials and local clinicians quoted in the story emphasized familiar community steps during respiratory season, including staying current on recommended vaccines and limiting contact with others when sick.

Staffing concerns spotlighted at a Tucson hospital

Registered nurses at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital held a rally Feb. 27 focused on safe staffing and patient advocacy, according to a Feb. 26 press release from National Nurses United. The release said nurses have raised concerns for months about working conditions and nurse-to-patient ratios, and it called for changes such as additional RN staffing and a designated rapid-response RN for each shift.

The press release also alleged retaliation against experienced nurses who advocate for patients. The document did not include a statement from hospital leadership.

AHCCCS modernization update: new claims data translator went live March 1

Arizona’s Medicaid agency, AHCCCS, posted a modernization update dated Feb. 25 describing technology changes rolling out in the coming weeks. The agency said a new Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) translator was scheduled to go live March 1, a behind-the-scenes change intended to improve data exchange with health plans and clearinghouses.

The update also outlined work to improve how fee-for-service claim denial reasons are communicated to providers, and it referenced upcoming modernization milestones, including systems tied to fraud, waste and abuse triage and a customer service platform powered by ServiceNow.
