New Orleans health brief: Boil-water advisory canceled; NICU expansion planned; new medical-school scholarships
New Orleans, LA – March 2, 2026 – Boil-water advisories ease in Uptown; Manning Family Children’s plans a 60-bed Level 4 NICU; Humana backs XOCOM scholarships.
New Orleans residents saw several healthcare and public-health updates this week, from water-system advisories to major investments in pediatric capacity and the physician pipeline.
Boil-water advisory canceled for several Uptown-area neighborhoods
The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO), in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health, canceled a precautionary boil-water advisory on Friday, Feb. 27 for Marlyville-Fontainebleau, Broadmoor, Hoffman Triangle and B.W. Cooper. SWBNO said the advisory had been issued after pressure dropped below 20 psi in parts of the area tied to water-main work and a service connection repair.
Even after advisories are lifted, SWBNO noted some customers may continue to see lower-than-normal water pressure while major infrastructure work remains underway. News coverage also described the disruption for neighborhood institutions and small businesses, including adjustments to food service and daily operations during the advisory period.
Manning Family Children’s outlines plan for a larger Level 4 NICU
Manning Family Children’s (LCMC Health) announced plans to build a new, expanded 60-bed Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at its New Orleans campus. The hospital said the project would increase its main-campus NICU capacity from 35 to 60 beds and is designed to support specialized care for critically ill newborns, with the unit serving as part of a broader regional neonatology network.
The hospital said the project is expected to break ground this spring and open in 2027, using shell space in its newest medical tower. The announcement described the expansion as a capacity and capability investment intended to support families from across Louisiana and the Gulf South.
Health insurer backs scholarships tied to Louisiana’s physician workforce
Humana created a $3 million scholarship endowment connected to Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM), with the goal of reducing financial barriers for incoming students and strengthening the physician pipeline in Louisiana. Reporting on the initiative said the fund is intended to support annual full-tuition scholarships and is linked to a commitment to practice in Louisiana after graduation, with an emphasis on areas such as primary care, internal medicine or maternal care.
