Milwaukee health brief: VA facility upgrades, Froedtert incident response, Children’s Wisconsin fundraising, and insurance changes

Milwaukee, WI – February 28, 2026 – Milwaukee VA upgrades, Froedtert security response, Children’s Wisconsin fundraising, and state insurance updates.

Milwaukee-area health leaders closed out the week with updates spanning hospital operations, long-term facility investments and upcoming insurance decisions.

Milwaukee VA announces infrastructure upgrades

The VA Milwaukee Health Care System said it is moving forward with multiple infrastructure projects intended to support safe, reliable patient care. The VA described the work as part of broader facility modernization efforts underway nationwide.

Projects listed for Milwaukee include renovations for a women’s clinic, replacement of a mental health emergency generator and switchboard, repairs to a steam tunnel on the north campus, upgrades connected to electronic health record modernization, and equipment and safety improvements that include MRI upgrades and corrections recommended by The Joint Commission.

Froedtert Hospital incident: campus remained open during investigation

In the Milwaukee metro, Wauwatosa police responded to Froedtert Hospital on Feb. 24 for what was described as a suspicious package investigation. According to information provided to FOX6, the medical center campus remained open, and patients, visitors and staff were routed through an alternate entrance while the investigation was underway.

Hospital disruptions can affect everything from appointment flow to emergency access, so officials typically encourage patients to follow on-site direction and posted entry guidance when an active response is happening.

Children’s Wisconsin reports $308 million campaign total

Children’s Wisconsin announced it raised $308 million through a five-year fundraising campaign, exceeding its goal by $8 million. The health system said the campaign drew contributions from at least 70,000 people and concluded at the end of 2025.

The organization indicated the funds are supporting a range of priorities, including pediatric programs and services, mental and behavioral health initiatives, and investments tied to research and specialized hospital care.

Health insurance watch: Wisconsin Group Insurance Board actions

For Milwaukee-area public employees and others who follow state benefit decisions, the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds reported that the Group Insurance Board set open enrollment dates for plan year 2027 as Oct. 5–30, 2026. The board also reviewed possible plan design and cost-sharing changes, but deferred decisions on some items to a future meeting and directed ETF to schedule a special meeting within the next two weeks.

Outbreak watch: local health systems emphasize measles readiness

While no new Milwaukee-specific outbreak advisory surfaced in the sources reviewed this week, Froedtert published a Feb. 24 measles update highlighting renewed regional concern tied to recent cases in nearby counties and outlining how workplaces can prepare for potential exposures.
