Memphis health update: flu trends ease; Regional One security response and maternal support spotlight

Memphis, TN – March 3, 2026 – Flu activity is moderating in Shelby County as Regional One spotlights maternal supports and reports a security response.

Flu activity in Shelby County: moderate and trending down

The Shelby County Health Department’s influenza surveillance dashboard reported that influenza-like illness activity is decreasing and currently listed as moderate. In the most recent weekly snapshot, 4.5% of emergency department visits were for influenza-like illness, compared with 14.9% during the same period last year. The department noted that adults ages 18–44 accounted for the largest share of influenza-like illness emergency visits, followed by children ages 0–4.

The health department said the surveillance page is updated every few days during periods of high seasonal activity, offering a frequently refreshed look at how respiratory illness is affecting local emergency rooms.

Regional One: heavy police presence reported outside the hospital

Action News 5 reported a heavy law-enforcement presence at Regional One Hospital in Memphis late Thursday, Feb. 26. The station also reported multiple Memphis police officers and state troopers at a separate scene in the Parkway Village area near South Perkins Road and Cottonwood Road, with at least one ambulance in the area. Officials had not confirmed whether the two scenes were connected, and the station described the situation as developing.

Regional One highlights maternal support program tied to prenatal care

In a separate update, Regional One Health highlighted its Maternal One Model (MOM) Program, which the hospital says is designed to connect eligible expectant mothers to regular prenatal care while also helping address practical barriers that can affect health outcomes. The hospital’s description lists supports such as help navigating transportation, access to healthy food, baby supplies, and referrals to community resources.

Regional One said the MOM Program began in August 2024 and supported more than 150 patients in its first year, with services sometimes continuing for up to a year for families with multiple needs. The hospital also said it is exploring ways to sustain the program after its current grant funding is expected to end in June 2026.
