Measles concerns near Seattle, plus hospital workforce and insurance updates
Seattle, WA – March 3, 2026 – Measles concerns grow ahead of Seattle’s World Cup matches as regional cases rise; plus licensing and benefits updates.
Measles outbreak concerns as Seattle prepares for World Cup crowds
Health officials in the Seattle region are watching a measles outbreak in Snohomish County as the city prepares to host FIFA World Cup matches this summer. FOX 13 Seattle reported Feb. 27 that Snohomish County’s confirmed measles cases had doubled to 14 over about a month, with officials saying the new cases involved people who were not vaccinated and were connected to ongoing cases.
The report also cited concerns that large international crowds could amplify spread of vaccine-preventable illnesses during mass gatherings. Separate reporting from the University of Minnesota’s CIDRAP described the pace of measles activity nationally and referenced Washington’s outbreak status in Snohomish County, citing state and local health updates.
Seattle Children’s nurses’ union alleges retaliation and files labor actions
The Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) said March 2 that it is escalating action at Seattle Children’s Hospital, alleging management retaliation and targeting of nurses in several areas, including PACU (Seattle), ambulatory clinics, and the Bellevue Surgery Center. WSNA said it has filed grievances and Unfair Labor Practice charges and has raised the issue with hospital leadership.
The union’s update focuses on workplace conditions and safety practices. Labor disputes and workplace complaints can affect how hospitals recruit and retain staff, particularly during late-winter respiratory season when patient volumes are often higher.
State licensing systems scheduled to go offline in March
The Washington State Board of Nursing announced Feb. 27 that statewide licensing and credentialing systems for health professionals and facilities will be unavailable from 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, until the morning of Tuesday, March 24, due to a Healthcare Enforcement and Licensing Management System (HELMS) release. The agency urged applicants and licensees to complete applications and renewals ahead of the outage to avoid delays.
City of Seattle benefits notice: dependent eligibility reverification
The City of Seattle’s Human Resources benefits site posted a notice about a dependent eligibility reverification process running March 9 through May 4. The announcement says employees who enrolled a dependent before Jan. 1, 2024, will receive a reverification letter from Alight Solutions during the week of March 9, with documentation due by May 4 to confirm dependent eligibility for coverage.
