Measles Cases Climb in Southeastern Pennsylvania as State Fines Aetna and Main Line Hospitals Earn National Honors
Philadelphia, PA – March 9, 2026 – Measles cases in nearby counties prompt renewed vigilance as state regulators fine Aetna and Main Line hospitals earn national rankings.
Pennsylvania health officials are tracking a growing measles cluster in southeastern counties, with cases reported in communities surrounding Philadelphia and recent exposure warnings tied to high-traffic travel hubs.
Measles Cases Reported in Region
As of early March, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed 12 measles cases among state residents in 2026, including cases in Lancaster, Montgomery, and Chester counties. Eight of the cases are linked to an outbreak in Lancaster County, according to state officials.
Philadelphia has not confirmed a case within city limits this year, but local health officials have previously warned of possible exposure at Philadelphia International Airport. Public health experts note that measles spreads easily through the air and can lead to serious complications, particularly for young children, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems.
Health departments continue contact tracing and are advising residents to check their vaccination status and follow official guidance if they believe they were exposed.
State Insurance Department Fines Aetna
The Pennsylvania Insurance Department announced March 3 that Aetna will pay a $550,000 penalty following a market conduct exam that found violations of mental health parity laws. Regulators said the insurer must also repay affected members with interest and correct internal practices.
State officials said the action is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that mental health and substance use disorder benefits are handled in line with coverage standards required under state and federal law. The order applies to policyholders across Pennsylvania, including those in the Philadelphia region.
Main Line Hospitals Recognized Nationally
Main Line Health reported March 4 that Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and Paoli Hospital were named among Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals for 2026. In Pennsylvania rankings, Lankenau placed ninth, with Bryn Mawr and Paoli also ranking in the top tier statewide.
The rankings are based on recommendations from medical professionals and measures of patient experience and quality indicators, according to the health system.
What Residents Should Know
Residents can review immunization records and monitor updates from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health regarding measles exposures. Insurance members affected by recent enforcement actions may receive notices directly from their carrier. Patients seeking care at local hospitals can check health system websites for service updates and recognitions.
If you have urgent symptoms, seek medical care. For general questions, talk with a licensed clinician.
