Fresno hospitals expand training, burn rehab; CalPERS data incident details and respiratory virus update

Fresno, CA – March 3, 2026 – Community Regional adds new federally backed residency slots, opens a burn therapy gym, and CalPERS breach details emerge.

Hospital workforce: seven new residency positions at Community Regional

Community Regional Medical Center will host seven additional UCSF Fresno medical residency positions backed by newly approved federal funding, according to a Feb. 27 update from UCSF Fresno and Community communications. The positions are part of a nationwide allocation intended to strengthen the physician workforce.

The announcement notes the new slots add to positions awarded since 2023 under federal legislation expanding Medicare-supported graduate medical education. The organizations said the new positions will be phased in over the next several years as trainees enter programs and rotate through services.

Burn recovery: new Burn Therapy Gym opens at the Leon S. Peters Burn Center

Community Regional has opened a dedicated Burn Therapy Gym inside its Leon S. Peters Burn Center, ABC30 reported Feb. 26. Hospital leaders said the specialized space is designed to support rehabilitation during burn recovery, which can involve long hospital stays and extended follow-up.

In the report, the burn center’s medical director said providing therapy in a dedicated area can reduce the need to move vulnerable patients through other parts of the hospital, helping limit exposure risks while patients heal. ABC30 reported the project was supported in part by a donation from the Lemoore Volunteer Fire Department. The station also noted the burn center serves a wide region as the only comprehensive burn center between Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Health insurance privacy: Conduent incident affects some CalPERS members

California State Retirees (CSR), a statewide retiree advocacy organization, reported Feb. 27 that Conduent experienced a cyber incident affecting a limited portion of its network. CSR said CalPERS told the group the breach impacted about 1,100 CalPERS members and that multiple plans were affected, including Anthem, Blue Shield, Health Net, Kaiser Permanente, and Western Health Advantage.

CSR said Conduent is providing affected members with 12 months of credit monitoring and identity restoration services. The notice included contact information for Conduent’s dedicated phone line and an enrollment deadline of May 31 for the no-cost services.

Outbreak watch: state dashboard shows flu and RSV activity still elevated

The California Department of Public Health’s respiratory virus dashboard, updated Feb. 27, lists seasonal influenza activity as elevated statewide and reports RSV activity is also elevated, with hospitalizations highest among children and older adults. The dashboard lists COVID-19 activity as very low statewide.

Local residents can follow updates from Fresno County public health and health care systems and use official sources for the latest community guidance during respiratory virus season.
