Detroit health brief: behavioral health expansion, medical-debt safeguards, and HIV prevention events

Detroit, MI – February 27, 2026 – Metro Detroit health update: a new behavioral health hospital plan, medical-debt proposals, and HIV prevention events.

Several Detroit-area health developments this week point to a common theme: building easier paths into care, whether that means more behavioral health capacity, fewer financial surprises after treatment, or low-barrier community prevention events.

Behavioral health: Henry Ford transfer sets stage for inpatient psychiatric beds

Henry Ford Health has transferred its Madison Heights hospital site to Warren-based Trillium Health Care Management, a move that is expected to convert much of the building into an inpatient behavioral health facility. Local reporting says renovations are expected to take about a year, with plans for a 75-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital and a possible expansion to more than 100 beds.

Henry Ford, headquartered in Detroit, is expected to continue operating and staffing the emergency department at the site as a standalone 24/7 emergency care option while the rest of the facility transitions.

Health insurance and hospital bills: medical-debt safeguards highlighted in Lansing

In her final State of the State address, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer highlighted proposals aimed at limiting the impact of medical debt for Michigan residents. The ideas described in a Bridge Michigan recap include capping interest rates on medical debt, keeping medical debt off credit reports, banning home liens or foreclosures tied to medical debt, and requiring hospitals to establish financial assistance programs.

Whitmer also referenced federal Affordable Care Act premium subsidies that she said Congress allowed to lapse, while urging state lawmakers to take steps that stabilize Medicaid funding.

Public health: Detroit Black HIV Awareness Summit scheduled for Feb. 27

The Detroit Health Department’s Ending the HIV Epidemic Program is hosting the 2026 Detroit Black HIV Awareness Summit on Friday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The city’s event listing describes the summit as a forum to elevate community voices around HIV, highlight local impact, and reinforce the need for education and equitable access to care and services. The listing notes childcare and transportation support for attendees.

Community prevention: free substance-misuse and youth mental health summits on Feb. 28

On Saturday, Feb. 28, a double summit focused on men’s substance misuse prevention and youth and teen mental health is scheduled at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church. Organizers told WDIV that the free event is expected to include prevention education, wellness screenings, yoga, acupuncture, meals and other services, as part of ongoing efforts to bring prevention resources to Detroit’s west side.
