At UT Southwestern Medical Center, The Cary Council gathered on February 24 to kick off its 2026 programming year, focusing on cancer prevention and early-stage research. Organizers reported that since its founding, the group has funded 24 early-stage research grants of $50,000 each.

Leaders said those seed grants have helped researchers secure tens of millions of dollars in follow-on funding, supporting scientific discovery and medical education in Dallas. The event also recognized the legacy of Dr. Edward H. Cary and the continued philanthropic support for innovation at the academic medical center.

Infectious Disease Physician Recognized

UT Southwestern also announced that Dr. Josephine Thinwa, an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine, has been selected for a 2026 Women Who STEAM Award from the Dallas Chapter of The Links.

The award recognizes professional achievement and community impact in science and medicine. The organization cited her work in infectious diseases and global health, as well as her commitment to mentorship and advancing research.
