County budget: Health insurance costs push new savings request

Travis County Commissioners Court has asked department heads to identify 5% spending reductions as the county prepares for a tight budget year, according to KUT. County Budget Director Travis Gatlin told KUT the county is not considering a hiring freeze or layoffs as part of the request and expects minimal to no impact on county services.

KUT reported the county is projecting up to a $13 million shortfall, driven largely by sharply higher employee health insurance costs. The county spent $2.6 million on employee health insurance last year, and this year those costs are estimated at roughly $14 million to $17 million. Departments’ proposed cuts are due to the budget office April 27, and the county must pass a balanced budget before the next fiscal year begins in October.
