Atlanta health watch: measles update, free Vine City clinic, and hospital capacity moves

Atlanta, GA – February 27, 2026 – Measles tracing, a free Vine City clinic, Emory heart-device milestone, and a major metro hospital expansion.

Metro Atlanta’s latest health updates include a state measles investigation, a free community clinic event in the city, and two hospital-system announcements that point to changing demand for specialty and inpatient care.

Outbreak watch: Georgia confirms a new measles case

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) announced a confirmed measles case in an unvaccinated Bryan County resident who recently traveled out of state. DPH said it is notifying people who may have been exposed and emphasized that measles spreads through the air and can remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

DPH’s guidance also notes that people with measles symptoms should contact a health care provider immediately and should not go to a doctor’s office, hospital, or public health clinic without first calling ahead.

Access-to-care: free community clinic serves Vine City

FOX 5 Atlanta reported on a free community health clinic hosted at Beulah Baptist Church, with services aimed at Atlanta residents in and around Vine City. The report described free health screenings, medical consultations and connections to local health resources, delivered in partnership with Grady HealthCare’s Office of Health Outcomes, the Fulton County Board of Health and Emory St. Joseph Hospital.

Hospital care: Emory highlights LVAD implantation volume

Emory Healthcare said it has again been recognized as a leading provider for left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. LVADs are mechanical pumps used to support blood flow in people with advanced heart failure, including some patients awaiting transplant. Emory reported ranking in the nation’s top five for LVAD implantation, with 108 implants in 2025.

Capacity planning: Piedmont Fayette begins major expansion

In the southern metro area, FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Piedmont Fayette Hospital broke ground on a seven-story patient tower expansion in Fayetteville. Hospital officials said the roughly 200,000-square-foot addition is expected to add 90 beds initially and four new operating rooms, part of a larger expansion intended to meet the needs of a growing community.

Health insurance note: Georgia Access highlights 1095 and special enrollment

The state’s Georgia Access marketplace notes that open enrollment for plan year 2026 ended Jan. 15, 2026, but certain qualifying life events may trigger a special enrollment period. Georgia Access also directs enrollees to retrieve 1095 tax forms through its portal or enrollment channels.
