Atlanta-area health update: hospital expansion plans, infant botulism outbreak closure, and Georgia Access coverage reminders
Atlanta, GA – March 3, 2026 – Piedmont Fayette begins a major expansion, CDC closes a ByHeart infant botulism outbreak, and Georgia Access shares 1095 steps.
Metro Atlanta residents saw several health-related updates over the past several days, spanning hospital capacity planning, an outbreak status change tied to an infant formula recall, and routine health insurance paperwork reminders.
Piedmont Fayette breaks ground on major patient-tower expansion
Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville has broken ground on a large campus expansion, described by the health system and local reporting as one of Piedmont Healthcare’s biggest recent capital projects. The plan centers on a new patient tower of about 200,000 square feet and includes an initial increase of 90 beds, along with four new operating rooms.
Hospital leaders said the project is intended to meet the needs of a growing South Metro Atlanta population. Coverage also noted new operating room technology planned for advanced procedures, as the campus adds space for inpatient and surgical care.
CDC: ByHeart infant botulism outbreak is over
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared a rare infant botulism outbreak linked to ByHeart infant formula to be over. CDC reporting and related coverage said there have been no new cases since mid-December.
Health officials reported 48 infants became ill during the outbreak period dating back to 2023, and all were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. The outbreak was tied to recalled powdered infant formula sold nationally, and CDC materials continue to reference the company recall of ByHeart products announced in November 2025.
Health insurance paperwork and special enrollment reminders from Georgia Access
Georgia Access, the state’s ACA marketplace, has continued to direct enrollees to retrieve Form 1095 tax information through the Georgia Access portal, an EDE account, or enrollment help channels such as an agent. The site also notes that open enrollment for plan year 2026 ended Jan. 15, 2026, while qualifying life events may open a special enrollment period for people who need to start or change coverage.
Georgia Access listings also show upcoming outreach at metro-area events in early March, including an Atlanta stop tied to a Georgia Tech athletics event.
