Anaheim health brief: CalOptima enrollment falls, nurse labor dispute highlighted, and inspection-related closures listed
Anaheim, CA – March 2, 2026 – CalOptima enrollment drops raise coverage concerns as Anaheim also sees recent food-safety closures and a nurse strike.
Anaheim residents are seeing several health-access and public-health issues converge, from insurance churn to staffing pressures and inspection-driven closures.
Health insurance: CalOptima enrollment drop draws provider concern
Orange County medical providers are watching CalOptima enrollment closely after county health leaders reported a sharp decline in participation over the past two months. NBC Los Angeles reported that more than 26,500 members left the program in that period, and providers raised concerns about whether clinics can maintain services if the trend continues.
County leaders told NBC Los Angeles the drop is linked in part to new eligibility requirements. The report also noted that some patients cited immigration enforcement activity as a reason for disenrolling.
Hospital staffing: West Anaheim Medical Center labor dispute in focus
A new report highlighted ongoing labor tensions involving registered nurses at West Anaheim Medical Center, where nurses have been bargaining for about a year over issues that include staffing, retention and working conditions. The Anaheim Today item described the action as part of a wider wave of nursing strikes and said a judge was expected to consider whether the nurses could continue their strike.
Hospital labor disputes can be unsettling for patients even when facilities plan to stay open, particularly when scheduling and staffing are central concerns.
Public health: Recent Anaheim food-site closures tied to inspections
A weekly Orange County Register roundup, citing the Orange County Health Care Agency database, listed multiple Anaheim locations that were ordered to close and, in several cases, later allowed to reopen after follow-up. The list covering Feb. 20 through Feb. 26 included:
- La Michoacana Irresistible at Anaheim Marketplace, closed Feb. 26 for a cockroach infestation and allowed to reopen Feb. 27
- Pixar Pier Chiller at Disney California Adventure, closed Feb. 25 for a rodent infestation and allowed to reopen the same day
- Food sales at Home Run Park, closed Feb. 25 for operating without a valid health permit and allowed to reopen Feb. 27
- Taquerias Guadalajara, closed Feb. 20 for insufficient hot water and allowed to reopen the same day
- Ma’s Dumpling, listed as closed Feb. 25 for a cockroach infestation
Inspection closures are intended to reduce risk while problems are corrected. Residents can follow local public health guidance and use official inspection information when making dining decisions.
Schools: Anaheim Elementary posts updated COVID-19 communications hub
The Anaheim Elementary School District’s coronavirus information page continues to archive weekly family letters and states the district is receiving guidance from the Orange County Department of Education, the CDC, the California Department of Public Health and the OC Health Care Agency.
