Albuquerque health brief: measles updates, MDC medical-care audit, and insurance prior-authorization changes
Albuquerque, NM – March 2, 2026 – Measles cases in NM detention centers, a renewed MDC medical-care audit, and insurer prior-authorization updates.
Measles activity in New Mexico drew new attention late last week after state health officials reported additional cases connected to detention facilities in the south of the state. Separate developments closer to home included a renewed court-ordered look at health services inside Bernalillo County’s Metropolitan Detention Center and new insurance utilization-management updates that could affect some members and providers.
Outbreak watch: measles cases linked to southern NM detention facilities
KUNM reported that the New Mexico Department of Health announced four new measles cases identified in detention facilities in southern New Mexico. Officials said the cases were brought into the facilities by inmates transferred from another state and that isolation and quarantine protocols were being used. At the time of the announcement, the state said it did not know of exposures outside the facilities.
Earlier coverage from KOB described New Mexico’s first confirmed measles case of 2026 as involving an inmate in the Hidalgo County Detention Center.
In an Albuquerque-based statement, the New Mexico Department of Justice said Attorney General Raúl Torrez joined a multistate lawsuit challenging a federal overhaul of the childhood immunization schedule, including a CDC decision memo that removed universally recommended status for several vaccines. The filing frames the change as unlawful and potentially harmful to public health.
The City of Albuquerque’s Environmental Health Department lists the NMDOH helpline (1-833-796-8773) as a resource to help residents find local pharmacies with vaccine in stock and answer questions.
Healthcare oversight: audit flags gaps in MDC medical care
A KOAT report on an October 2025 audit said a court-appointed medical expert found the level of medical care at the Metropolitan Detention Center unconstitutional. The review cited staffing shortages, delays responding to medical emergencies, and delays in routing medical requests to clinical staff, along with concerns about care for chronic conditions and other higher-need patients.
KOAT reported that UNM Hospital, which oversees medical services at MDC, said individuals housed there are receiving high-quality care under nationally recognized detention health standards, while acknowledging remaining gaps largely tied to staffing levels.
Health insurance: prior-authorization updates and local enrollment help
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico posted a notice dated Feb. 24 outlining prior-authorization or recommended clinical-review direction changes for some commercial and government program members, effective April 1, 2026. The notice indicates that utilization management reviews may involve BCBSNM and vendor partners, depending on the member and service.
In Albuquerque, Albuquerque Public Schools also promoted a community ‘March Wellness Festival’ on March 11 at APS City Center, with on-site Medicaid and Medicare enrollment support and free vaccines listed among the services.
Air and respiratory conditions: particulate levels listed as moderate
On Feb. 27, the City of Albuquerque’s air-quality dashboard listed fine and coarse particulate indexes in the ‘Moderate’ range and reported a high juniper pollen count on the city’s east side. The city noted that wood burning was not prohibited, while encouraging residents to limit or avoid it where possible.
