Omaha health brief: Water-park permit warning, smoke alerts activated, and Bennington clinic opening
Omaha, NE – March 4, 2026 – DCHD warned a downtown hotel water park lacks valid permits; DHHS activated smoke alerts; Bennington clinic opens Mar. 9.
Omaha-area residents saw several health-related updates over the past few days, including a public warning tied to pool safety, a statewide air-quality alert system restart for the season, and a new primary care access point preparing to open in the northwest metro.
Public health: Downtown hotel water park warning
The Douglas County Health Department issued a public warning about the water park at the Holiday Inn Downtown near 14th and Cuming, saying it is operating without valid permits. The department said it cannot verify that the water park meets required safety standards.
According to local reporting, the health department ordered the water park to close in December after what it described as significant noncompliance with mechanical, chemical and safety standards. The department has also said Omaha police cited the hotel’s owner earlier this week, and that it is coordinating with the Omaha City Prosecutor’s Office on next steps.
Air quality: Nebraska activates its 2026 smoke advisory system
Nebraska health and environment officials announced Feb. 27 that the state has activated its Smoke Advisory System for 2026. The system is used to issue advisories when conditions suggest smoke from prescribed burning or wildfires could significantly affect air quality in parts of the state.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said the advisory process uses information that can include smoke-plume modeling and readings from air-quality monitors, including sites in the Omaha area. Officials also noted that local health departments, including Douglas County, may issue additional information for their jurisdictions when smoke impacts are expected.
Healthcare access: New Bennington primary care clinic set to open
Nebraska Medicine announced that its Nebraska Medicine-Bennington Health Center is preparing to open to patients on Monday, March 9. The clinic is located near 156th and State streets and is scheduled to be open for appointments Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The organization said the new site is intended to expand access to primary care in a fast-growing area of the Omaha metro. Nebraska Medicine also described the clinic as a local entry point to its broader network of specialists and services. An open house was held Feb. 28, and the ribbon-cutting ceremony took place March 2, with remarks that included Nebraska Medicine leaders and Bennington Mayor Clint Adams.
