Hospital readiness and infection prevention
Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is highlighting infection-prevention work after being listed as the top hospital in Tampa Bay and a top-three hospital in Florida in Newsweek’s ‘World’s Best Hospitals 2026.’ In its announcement, TGH also noted recognition by Newsweek and Statista as a 2026 leader in infection prevention, pointing to expanded use of data analytics and AI-enabled tools to flag patients at higher risk of severe infection.
One example cited by the hospital is its sepsis-monitoring ‘Sepsis Hub’ within the Care Coordination Center, built with partners including Palantir and physician-scientists. TGH reported the tool had helped save 569 lives as of July 2025 and contributed to a 30% reduction in sepsis patients’ length of stay.
Research spotlight: younger colorectal cancer survivors
Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa has launched a Young Adult Colorectal Cancer Survivors Study aimed at learning directly from people diagnosed between ages 20 and 44. In interviews highlighted by Spectrum News 9, researchers said the project is designed to capture health histories and patient experiences — including barriers to screening, diagnosis and follow-up care — so the findings can inform future education and awareness efforts.
The report also noted that colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in people under 50, citing the American Cancer Society, and that current guidelines recommend routine screening beginning at age 45. The story listed risk factors that can prompt earlier evaluation, including family history of polyps or colon cancer, certain genetic syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use and alcohol use.
